Folate

Folate (vitamin B9) is essential for making new cells, as it is crucial for DNA synthesis, red blood cell production, and proper nervous system function.

Symptoms of low folate include fatigue, irritability, a smooth and tender tongue, mouth sores, and shortness of breath, which are often signs of folate-deficiency anemia. In more severe cases, it can also cause diarrhea, weight loss, depression, and neurological symptoms like numbness or a pins-and-needles sensation. Low folate is particularly concerning during pregnancy due to the risk of neural tube defects in the developing baby.
